چکیده

Background and Objective Dry EEG sensors are important for BCI technologies to gain wide-spread long-term use. The gel-based ones present inconveniences: gel is wet, it dries up and itches, requires hair washing afterwards, varying impedances and need for periodical recalibration. The existing dry EEG electrodes (typically arrays of metallic pins) have higher impedances than the wet ones, dependent on the level of pressure, and thus stable in time. This pressure makes them “bearable” to some (as opposed to “comfortable”). Quoting one early designer and user of such pin arrays, “the thin pin arrays can hurt your skin if you use them (for) too long” [1]. Here a new dry EEG electrode is proposed, able to outperform electrically the existing dry electrodes while reducing the discomfort by distributing more uniformly and more flexibly the pressure on the skin of the scalp through the hair. The novelty consists in using conductive bristles instead of pins.

Bristle-sensors--low-cost flexible passive dry EEG electrodes for neurofeedback and BCI applications.

In this paper, we present a new, low-cost dry electrode for EEG that is made of flexible metal-coated polymer bristles. We examine various standard EEG paradigms, such as capturing occipital alpha rhythms, testing for event-related potentials in an auditory oddball paradigm and performing a sensory motor rhythm-based event-related (de-) synchronization paradigm to validate the performance of th...

Therapeutic effects of neurofeedback (by the induction of neuroplasticity) on treatment of people with neurological disorders such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Neurofeedback, the self-regulation of brain signals recorded using Electroencephalogram (EEG), allows Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) users to enhance cognitive as well as motor functions using specific training strategies. Therapeutic effects of neurofeedback (by the induction of neuroplasticity) on treatment of people with neurological disorders such as Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (...

To What Extent can Dry and Water-based EEG Electrodes Replace Conductive Gel Ones? - A Steady State Visual Evoked Potential Brain-computer Interface Case Study

Recent technological advances in the field of skin electrodes and on-body sensors indicate a possibility of having an alternative to the traditionally used conductive gel electrodes for measuring electrical signals of the brain (electroencephalogram, EEG). This paper evaluates whether water-based and dry contact electrode solutions can replace the gel ones. The quality of the obtained signal by...

Subliminal Probing for Private Information via EEG-Based BCI Devices

EEG-based Brain-Computer-Interfaces are becoming available as consumer-grade devices, used in applications from gaming to learning programs with neuro-feedback loops. While enabling attractive applications, their proliferation introduces novel privacy concerns and security threats. One such example are attacks in which adversaries compromise EEG-based BCI devices, and are able to analyze the us...
